When Pot Odds Don't Work
Of course calculating pot odds is something a good poker player should be able to do in no time. Of course you can’t call yourself a poker professional if you don’t have an analytical way of thinking. But still mathematical analysis is not what the game of poker is only about. The factor of psychology is very important and that’s why a really good poker bot still does not exist. Sometimes you should act regardless of your pot odds. And the only factor, which can change your tactics, is your opponent’s behavior. Generally if you are against a not aggressive player and he raises immediately after you, you should lower your odds and fold hands you usually keep.
Lets regard a certain example. Suppose you have Ac4c. No raise preflop and something like AsJh8h come on the board. Six people you included are at the table. Your opponent sitting on the first position raises. It is better to fold in this situation even though you have relatively good odds.
Why is that? Well, he probably hit something good. Your opponent might have two hearts, two spades or King-Jack. We could name hundreds of the situations similar to this one, but it would be useless. We just want you to get the idea.
And if you are in doubt, but still don’t want to fold your good hand – raise. Calling will lower your chances.
