Pot odds are the odds you need to call or not to call a bet. The most popular pot odds theory belongs to David Sklansky. But I must warn you – it’s very, very complicated theory. Don’t read it if you’re not ready to spend long cold night with nightmares about your odds.
Still reading? Ok. I’m happy you didn’t give it up. Now, let’s try to master that theory. And the best way to understands is – yes, to give an example. So, let’s suppose you’re sitting with something like:
5s 10s
Holy shit! Do you really think you can win with that? I don’t think so. But look at the flop (you can do it – this dumb sitting opposite gave you a free card):
8s Js 4d
What a board! Bad board, actually… Now, take your calculator. Turn it on. Let’s begin: you have 47 unseen cards. What it has to do with pot odds? I’ll show you. First of all answer: what cards can help you and what can not. What did you get? Right: 9 are your friends… If any other card from the rest 38 will come then – you wife will be very unhappy to see you moneyless.
So, back to earth or to odds. As I stated 38 are not going to make you wife happy. Let’s divide it by 9 (did you remember how we got this number?)
Should I give you an answer or you’ve already calculated, haven’t you? So, the number you got (It is 4,22, by the way)- to-1 is exactly what is called the pot odds. It’s bigger than 1-to-5 (1-to-5 is something like a critical mark). You can call. That’s it. Easy? Yes. So, let’s pity those who jumped to another article at the very beginning.
