Sometimes you have a nutlike draw and hope to hit a monster on the turn or river. What should you do? Just call? That’s a usual tactics for so-called “calling stations” primary known for being unprofitable. But if there is a possibility to get a free card, don’t miss it, cause it can help you to win a large pot. To get a free card means to see the next card for free that is to check in late position. That will give a good chance to make a hand. But in case you don’t hit anything useful, you will not lose additional money.
By the way, do not mix getting and giving a free card. As I stated before, you can get one only in case you are in late position. If being the first to act you check in hope to improve you hand, don’t indulge in illusions: you are not getting a free card but offer this possibility to your opponents. And not only checking – calling in the situation when you need to raise can cost you the whole pot.
Suppose you play NL Holdem. You are heads-up with 5h7h. Both you and your opponent call and the flop comes as follows: 2h3h6h. And instead of raising you only bet. Your opponent calls. Jc comes on the turn and you check. Your opponent does the same. Definitely he does not have anything. The river is Th and you see his 2sJh at the showdown. He hit the better flush on the River. You know why this happened? You gave him a free card. If you had raised or gone all in on the flop or even on the turn your opponent would fold as he didn’t have odds to call. But you gave him the possibility to comfortably wait for the cards he needed.
