Let me introduce myself - I’m Daniel Thorn. I will be honest - I’ve never won at the WSOP. But for several years I’ve been making a living just playing poker online. When I deposit money I use only my AmEx Platinum. I think it tells volumes.
So, in this section I described the hands that were really played. I think it can be better than tons of poker literature. I tried to make it not only educational, but also entertaining. Read, enjoy and learn from my mistakes.

I don’t like folding big pairs. In fact, I don’t like folding pocket pairs at all. It’s like a superstition. There is something mystical in pocket pairs. Though I’m not very superstitious I usually play hands like this. So, what I had? A couple of kings:

Kc Ks

I was in early position. As big pairs don’t allow to be passive, I raised at prefop thus blowing out 6 of 8 players. So, there are two of us, me and the Big Blind. The flop comes:

3d 4d Jh

The Big Blind types: “Whatta board!” and bets. I never pay any attention to these remarks. I just try to evaluate the situation. What it the best hand now? He can be on a flush draw. Or on a straight draw, but the latter is very unlikely. I don’t think anyone will raise (and he raised preflop) with trash. He should have either A2 or 56 to be on a straight draw. What else? He could have a couple of jacks. Or any other pair that could became a set. But he should think about the same threat. I raised. He reraised. I was glad he couldn’t see my face at this moment (that’s why I like online poker). I reraised. The Blind called. Let’s see what comes next:

3d 4d Jh 7c

No help for my kings, but still no overcards on the board. I can’t help feeling happy about it. My only opponent checks. Is he going to check-raise or just trying to get a free card? I raised. I didn’t doubt he would call. And he really did. The last card wasn’t an overcard too:

3d 4d Jh 7c Td

I think I can definitely exclude a flush threat. The Big Blind checks again. But I’m stubborn. I don’t like giving a free card. I raise. He calls. I think my opponents is one of this guys who thinks that folding on the river is a mauvais ton. Maybe, he is right, maybe he’s not. But the fact is that now he has only a Big Slick against my pocket cowboys.
