Your position at a poker table is something you always should bear in mind while figuring out your next move, especially pre-flop. Three types of positions are usually distinguished: early position, middle position and late position. Each requires unique strategy. Let’s see the differences between the positions and find out how they should influence your playing style.
Early Position
If we take a full table, the two players after the blinds are in early position. You always have to make tough decisions when you are in early position as you don’t have any information about your opponents’ hands. The first person to the left from the Big Blind is called under-the-gun because he can’t vary his style according to other player’s movements. The situation of the next person to act is not better. So, when you are in early position you have to play only potentially strong hands like big pairs (Jacks or better) AK or AQ. Be careful with QQ and JJ as if there are many players at the table, the possibility of someone having a better pair is very high We also do not advise you to play something like KQ, as if there is a straight draw someone will have an Ace almost for sure.
Middle Position
For a full table the middle position will be 5th,6th and 7th persons to act. In middle position you can play a bit looser than in early: you have some information about your opponents. Feel free to play middle pairs (not less than eights) and gapped connectors like AJ or AT. KQ is good here two, of course if there hasn’t been more than one raise – fold.
Late Position
That is two last players to act plus the button. That is the most convenient position as you have enough information about your opponents. If you realize that there are limpers you may play more loosely. Play small connectors and up-downs like A7. If you see that the action is tough you should tighten your style depending on the information you have obtained.
