You should test the medicine twice before you launch it for mass consumption – unexpected collateral effect of a drug can lead you to the bankruptcy.. I suppose Pfizer Inc. and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. didn’t do all the tests – they are now charged for distributing the drug, which can cause gambling addiction in case of high consumption, and may be forced to pay millions for their mistake.
It appeared that the Mirapex medicine, a popular medicine which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease and mimics the action of dopamine in the brain, made the patients gambling addicts – in 2.5% of cases people became strongly addicted, even though before it was no reason for it. They spent more than $650,000 on gambling. The issue about this collateral effect was published in 2003 (!), but it wasn’t taken into consideration. The result is – accusation, lawsuit for more than 50 million dollars and prejudiced reputation.
They have never read “Strong Medicine” of Arthur Hailey. They were wrong.
