The popularity of Texas Hold’em is growing by the second. You can feel it; it is almost in the air. The game is available seven nights a week at practically any local facilities and 24/7 online.
This increasingly raises the tension between the issue of gambling and the church authorities.
Ministers are growing more and more worried how gambling might influence people’s moral standards and way of thinking. ‘Is gambling immoral?’ they are asking themselves. What worries them is whether gambling interferes with faith and how, in case of the positive answer.
Poker is addictive, pastors say, as you get something for nothing and this means giving people false hope. Those who play poker most of all cannot actually afford it – they are the poor of our society.
The local ministers do not give any definite answer to the issue they raise. They can only speak for themselves.
