The new poker champion, known as Tony G, earned his title by winning the 2005 European Poker Championship recently. First prize went to Tony G, who took home £ 240,000 (which comes out to roughly $428K.)
A poker player since 15, Tony G (whose real name is Antana Guoga) has made a number of highly placed final tables, but this is his first win of this magnitude. Hailing from Australia, Tony G made an attempt at Las Vegas casinos years ago but found out he was not yet ready for big time play.
Returning to Melbourne, he upped his skill level and began playing online. Winning the European Poker Championships, which also paid out £ 121,178 to Sverre Sundbo of Norway, and £69,090 to Edward Moncada in second and third place prizes, shows that Tony G has learned his lessons well.
