The British Gambling Bill in October 2004 promised a big casino in every region of the country. However, it is now absolutely clear that only a couple of casinos are going to be built. This is all due to massive public condemnation of the bill. Let’s see how the story unfolded.
First of all, several secret meetings took place, in which British Prime Ministers took part along with the leading American casino groups. What did they have in common, you might ask? Big money and a new bill on gambling in Britain.
The aim of the laws they were discussing was to allow quite a number of US-type casinos to the built all over Britain. Apparently, American corporations were planning to open an all-new thriving gambling market in Britain and also… to get excellent opportunities for money laundering.
The British Government kept all preparations in secret and never mentioned the bill, even when asked directly. However, documents released by the Culture Department make it only too evident that British Ministers tried to help US casino bosses. So does the investigation carried out by the Observer.
When released, the bill was universally condemned by the media, the political parties and religious organizations. We don’t want money laundering, they said.
