WSOP History
Officially it started in 1970s. Really - much, much earlier.. in the summer of 1949, "Nick the Greek" Dandolos challenged Johnny Moss in Binion's casino and proposed high-stakes poker marathon.. Who knew that it would last for several months... Almost all types of poker play were experienced.
After this exhausting tournament when they stopped only to sleep a little Moss made it and won 2 million dollars.
This event attracted attention of many sport fans and collected a crowd which watched this incredible battle. Benny Binion took note of this and decided to recreate such atmosphere establishing World Series of Poker where poker pros struggled for the title of World Champion. Johnny Moss became best by popular vote.
Next year the determination procedure changed. Now competition played main role, and finally it was only one player who got everything defeating all others. Moss was first again. Next-year tournament started conquering masses.
WSOP starts gaining popularity progressively - number of participants grew from year to year, new competitions in wide variety of games were established. It involved more poker stars each year, discovered new talents, confirmed merited statuses and gave opportunity to show yourself. And it surely does now.
World Series of Poker is today ranked as the largest, the oldest and the most prestigious event in poker world. It enables everyone who has talent and some money to achieve heights they wanted to achieve and dreams become true.
